![]() ![]() I am now averaging over 3 quarts of oil burned in between oil changes. To do nothing will ultimately result in a catalytic converter failure and dumping of this car. I will repeat the process 2 or 3 times before attempting to hot soak the engine in transmission fluid for a few hours. This is a known problem so I felt it worth reporting it as a mechanical failure. Working under the guidance of my mechanic, I am starting a regiment of Seafoam and Lucas Oil at/before each oil change interval in an attempt to stem the large consumption of oil, likely due to inadequate sizing of the Toyota oil return holes at the bottom of the piston head. Entire engine needed to be removed to install a new gasket. OEM belt had a rubber sliver showing upon examination by owner. Decided to have redesigned Toyota intake manifold (orange) and new PCV installed, as well as any observed carbon removed. Idle dives below ideal level when coming to hard stops at stop signs. When bad, idle drops to 650 rpm instead of the normal 750 rpm. Throttle body pids were recalibrated and plates were cleaned of carbon to try to eliminate a diving idle issue when coming to a complete stop. Diagnosed by mechanic after taking off serpentine belt and spinning the spindle by hand to hear the failed bearings inside. Actuator was replaced to stop the grinding noise at start up. Timing Gear actuator issue with Corolla engines. I checked the lines and the gas tank but could not detect the leak. There was the smell of gas coming into the interior of the car. ![]() Light indicated engine problem but problem was that the gas cap needed to be replaced. More progress coming in the next few weeks. The back side of the headliner is water repellant thus it doesn't show any signs of leakage until it spills over at the drive or pass pillars. Our Vibe's headliner, acts like a channel/gutter and the water collected in it and ran either left or right (depending on the incline and where the leak was located from) and collected onto the A-pillar. Will likely sandblast some of this too, to where I get solid metal exposed. I just quickly scraped & burred the rust away to see wow bad it was. yet anyways! The rust started out at the base or "under" the sealant and then spread upward until it became visible just past the seal. Luckily, it did NOT rust through all the way. My Vibe's resting place for the next few weeks. He said this was one of the more difficult windshields that he removed in his 25+ years of working in the glass industry. Unfortunately he "cracked the windshield in the process of removing it. When attempting to cut out the old bead, he noticed some areas where it was damn near glass on metal, which made it almost impossible for him to get his cutting tools in there to safely remove it. With the bead being very thin, it barely gripped the glass in some areas AND did not allow room for "flexing" with the car. Very thin bead of caulk/sealant on top of a likely scratched/scraped exposed metal lip, from them scraping the original windshield out, is what happened. Today, I FINALLY had room in the shop AND our buddy/friend, who does windshields for a living, CONFIRMED that my 2004 Vibe windshield was NOT OEM and that it was improperly replaced by "who knows" and due to the improper installation, caused it to rust out and thus eventually leak. But I haven't heard this from other contributors. I took the car to a couple of body shops, and they told me the problem was because of an improperly installed replacement windshield. Probably in a month or so but not too much longer than that. Ill post pics & progress when I get started. My solution will to be have the windshield removed, repair any/all rust & repaint, then reinstall windshield. I'm definitely convinced that it is due to the windshield frame corrosion being totally gone, and allowing water to enter the pass side headliner. My 2004 Vibe GT just started having this problem about 3 months ago. Has anyone else had the leak problem? YES. So it has to be coming from the driver side luggage rack. When I covered the passenger side luggage rack and tested it in the rain, the leak persisted. It appears the leak is from the luggage rack, and seems to be coming from the driver side luggage rack. I bought Fix Tape Rubberized Waterproof Tape, for Boat Repair (Clear, 4 inches x 5 feet), and put it all the way across the top of the windshield. I was going to have my windshield replaced, but Safelight won't replace it because of some corrosion at the top of the windshield. ![]() The problem was previously diagnosed as a leaking windshield. Vibe Owners 070721 Passenger Headliner LeakÄear Vibe Owners, I still have a Headliner Leak, but on the passenger side of my 05 Vibe, from the joint where the headliner meets the plastic covering the roof column. ![]()
